Thermal survival blanket — what is it?

A thermal blanket is a thin polyethylene blanket designed to temporarily reduce heat loss from the human body. Typically, thermal blankets are made from foil, as well as heat-reflective thermoplastic with a metallised material.

How does it work?

The thermal blanket works based on the principles of thermal insulation and heat reflection to preserve human body heat. Its main mechanism of operation is to minimise the loss of body heat and create a barrier against the cold environment.
One side of the cover is usually made of a metallised material that has the property of reflecting heat. This side reflects heat from the human body outward, which significantly reduces heat loss due to emission. The other side is made of a material that has insulating properties. It helps keep the heat in under the blanket and prevents it from leaving. This creates a barrier against the cold of the outdoor environment.
When using a thermal blanket, interaction occurs between both sides. The blanket reflects part of the heat emitted from the body and at the same time retains the heat that already exists next to the human body. This mechanism helps conserve heat and maintain a safe body temperature in cold conditions.

How to use a thermal blanket correctly?
